Why do you want to take part in spiritual practices? Why do you wish to live a more contemplative life? It would be wise to ask yourself why you want to do these things before beginning. Do you want to become a better person? Are you having difficulty at work? Are you dealing with an unruly amount of stress in your life? Are you not satisfied with the choices you are making?

For me, I knew that I wanted to improve my attitude at work, reflect on my calling, be less anxious, not have another panic attack at work and get control of my temper. But why was it that I was able to know how I ought to respond, yet my actions would not be reflective of the person I knew I already was? The start to working on yourself is admitting you cannot. There is nothing you can do to improve yourself, and that is really the reason why you want to. However, the very fact that you want to become like someone else say, Jesus Christ, the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Shane Claiborne, whoever it might be, demonstrates that you are already that type of person.

Be encouraged and know that you already have made the first step in living a more contemplative life.
